Paid Internship Opportunity for GMU Art Student

Paid Internship Opportunity for GMU Art Student: Video/Photo/Web Assistant- Spring and Summer 2012 - Local television and video producer is seeking an additional GMU student to help with multiple independent video, photography and web projects. We are expanding our team because we have been commissioned to produce a documentary film and social media marketing campaign related to childhood cancer awareness. (Release date: September 1, 2012)

Location is walking distance from GMU's Fairfax Campus. Pay is $10 an hour to start. Hours are flexible but mostly weeknights between 7 pm and 10 pm and some weekends during the day.

The ideal candidate is a creative, self-starter with experience with video and photo editing and web design. This job also involves administrative tasks related to client correspondence and office organization. Training is provided.

Our projects range from documentaries, public service announcements, event videos, music videos and photography. Our team has won multiple local Emmys and several national awards.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is a small nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress. The Web Unit in the Office of Communications seeks an intern with a strong work ethic to perform various tasks in support of CBO’s Web site for a 10-week period during the summer. The successful candidate will report to the Managing Web Editor as part of a 3-person web shop and work with web staff to produce charts and other visual displays of statistical information for the website. The intern will also work with analysts to develop the agency’s infographics and other bespoke visualizations.
You’ll also get a chance to attend a bunch of cool events on Capitol Hill with other interns. You probably won’t see Jonathan Ive wandering the halls, but you can attend lectures by people like former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and journalist Cokie Roberts.
Qualifications
Candidates should have completed a minimum of 2 years of college (or equivalent credits) with formal training in graphic arts / graphic design and expertise with Adobe Creative Suites software. An interest in the visual display of statistical information is highly desirable. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must. The position also requires a person who can work independently and as a part of a team.
This internship can only be offered to students whose universities sponsor internships with federal agencies. There is no requirement for your university to pay or offer class credit for the internship but they must be willing to complete a form provided by CBO that indicates that they are sponsoring you for an unpaid internship at CBO which will be of educational benefit. Students must verify that their university is willing to sponsor your internship before applying but the statement won’t be required unless you are offered an internship.

Responsibilities:

Major projects will be illustrating communication concepts and creating/updating online documentation to support organizational change for the CRM project to ensure long-term sustainable process change.

Poster and flier creation using graphic design software, document edits using MS Word, and Powerpoint, uploading and editing documents to Sharepoint.

Graphic design of posters, fliers and promotional materials to support change and communication.

Technical writing to support online documentation.

Qualifications

·       Undergraduate Junior or Senior preferred.  

·       Should be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or Visual Arts

·       Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite is required; as well as Adobe Illustrator,  Sharepoint a plus.

·       Looking for candidates with a proven attention to detail and strong editing and/or writing skills

·       Bi-lingual Spanish skills are a plus

POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:    
Intern will be helping the Multimedia Graphic Designer with development of creative
and designs for collateral, marketing materials, proposals, presentations, etc. that are consistent with Southland’s brand. The qualified intern will report to the Multimedia Graphic Designer and will interface with key marketing contacts and interns to translate design concepts into tangible materials that strengthen the brand of the company. The intern will also assist in the maintenance of Southland’s website and other forms of electronic media. Intern must have strong communication and listening skills, attention
to detail, an aptitude for marketing, and be willing to actively contribute within a team environment.
PRIMARY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Helps determine size and arrangements of material and copy, selects style and size of type, and arranges layout based upon available space and aesthetic design concepts.
Able to problem solve creatively within brand guidelines.
Knowledge of grammar and composition rules required for editing and proofreading material.
Strong layout and typography skills are required.

A working knowledge of both Macintosh and PC platforms, and the ability to work with and convert files on both platforms. 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Enrolled in a certified graphic/ multimedia/ web design curriculum

Working knowledge of Microsoft suite

Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite

Web development and/or multimedia skills a plus

PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:

Interns are required to be physically able to walk and climb stairs, use their hands, eyes and ears to perform and communicate with others.

Internship opportunity with a home-based, Arlington literary publisher,

2-4 hours a week, doing a variety of tasks from marketing, press

releases, web research and updates, social media, possibly some design

work and hand bookbinding. In return, an intern will get first-hand

insights into how to run a small press, gain professional writing

experience, learn about media relations and other aspects of publishing.

The supervisor is looking primarily for someone who knows marketing and

could help on the business side of things with a good design eye and a

love of literature. The unpaid internship would start in January and, if

it works out, might result in a paid part-time position over the summer.

Requirements: Reliable, smart, meticulous, good writer, wide knowledge

of social media (FB/Twitter), Word Press, Microsoft Word. Quark Express
