Objectives: The objective of this internship is to introduce students to the fast paced world of publishing, while also affording them the opportunity to interact with graduate students and undergraduate peers in a scholarly environment. This internship will demand of students the application of editing, managing, marketing, communication, and graphic design skills in a real world publishing environment. By participating in this internship, students will be asked to work with fellow Editorial Board interns to successfully (1) rebrand and reinvent the scope of the journal and (2) coordinate the dissemination of GMU’s across the disciplines academic journal.
Course Requirements: To earn credit and to achieve the objectives above, students will be required to work a minimum of five (may be more depending on departmental requirements) hours a week during the spring 2011 semester. However, the board will begin bi-weekly meetings in mid-fall Semester of 2010 in order to adequately prepare the journal for spring submissions. Fall Preparation will include developing a new vision and mission statement, criteria for submission, operational policies, marketing plans and a new web interface. The spring semester will focus on implementing the new policies and generating and evaluating submissions.
Students will attend monthly meetings with the GTA Internship Coordinators to discuss the progress of the journal and reflect on any experiences or obstacles. In addition to departmental requirements regarding internships for credit, interns are also expected to fulfill their individual job descriptions listed below. These job descriptions are a general outline for the projects that will have to be completed in order to maintain a successful journal. Projects will be assigned by the Editor-in-Chief and Internship Coordinators.
